Starter/Grower Food for Chickens
Raising healthy, happy chickens starts with providing the right nutrition at each stage of their growth. One common question among poultry keepers is: how long should chickens stay on starter/grower feed? Although the instructions on the product tag are specific and can change, a good rule of thumb is 14-18 weeks. Here’s a more detailed guide to help you determine the best feeding schedule for your flock.
Starter Feed (0-6 Weeks)
Starter feed is formulated to provide high protein levels (usually around 18-20%) to support rapid growth and development in young chicks.
When to Start: From hatch until about 6 weeks of age
Why It’s Important: The extra protein and essential nutrients help chicks build strong bones and immune systems.
Grower Feed (6-18 Weeks)
Once your chicks reach about 6 weeks old, they should transition to grower feed, which has slightly lower protein content (16-18%).
When to Transition: Around 6 weeks old
Why It’s Important: Grower feed supports steady growth without promoting excessive weight gain, which can be harmful to young birds.
Layer Feed (18 Weeks and Beyond)
At about 18 weeks, or when hens start laying, it’s time to switch to layer feed. This feed contains the right balance of calcium and nutrients to support egg production.
When to Switch: Around 18 weeks old or at the first sign of laying
Why It’s Important: Layer feed includes added calcium to strengthen eggshells and maintain overall health.
Providing the right feed at the right time ensures your chickens grow strong and healthy. Remember to transition gradually when switching feeds to prevent digestive upset. Be sure that you do not eat any eggs from chickens that have been on a medicated feed for a minimum of 2-weeks after you’ve switched them to a non-medicated feed.
